Letters to the Editor

January23rd -- Medford Transcript

Jim Marzilli -- I look forward to Jeff joining me in the State House as a courageous partner in government.

Fifteen years ago I was elected to represent West Medford in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. It has been my honor and privilege to work on behalf of the people of Medford, Arlington and Massachusetts.

Last week I resigned from the House and was sworn into office as the state senator in a district that no longer includes Medford. In two weeks the people of West Medford and Arlington will be voting to fill the vacancy in the House of Representatives and I will be voting for Jeff Thielman.

Jeff Thielman is an exceptionally well-qualified candidate for the House. When he graduated from Boston College, he took the path less traveled and went to Peru to work with poor youth for three years in a program sponsored by the Jesuits. He returned to attend Boston College Law School and has spent much of his professional life building a network of private schools for our nation's urban poor.

Jeff has served on the Arlington School Committee and made the difficult decisions that don't always win a candidate votes, but are necessary. He has been a real leader in protecting the environment.

I am confident that Jeff will be a leader in the House on the issues important to the residents of Medford, including restoring local aid, protecting the environment, and making sure the voices of Medford are heard as the MBTA works to improve mass transit. He will work to protect the unique character of West Medford in all of its diversity.

I may have resigned from the House but I am not going away. I will continue to work on issues of shared concern to Medford and my new Senate district, including protecting the Mystic Lakes and River from environmental degradation.

I am leading the effort to close corporate tax loopholes and increase local aid for all of our communities. I will fight to make sure that the extension of the Green Line works for everyone. As Chairman of the Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development Committee of the Senate, I will work to put state funds into our local cultural institutions and not just the big downtown Boston programs.

I look forward to Jeff joining me in the State House as a courageous partner in government. We won't always agree, but Medford and Massachusetts need a leader and not a rubber stamp.

Jeff is the best candidate to represent our communities in the House of Representatives and I will be voting for him in the Democratic primary on Feb. 5.
