Poverty in Massachusetts
Eleven percent of our population or approximately 700,000 people live in poverty in Massachusetts. This is too high for a state as wealthy as ours. Sadly, the poverty rate has remained the same for the past five years. I have spent much of my life working to help people who live in difficult circumstances and look forward to the opportunity to address poverty issues if I am elected to the Legislature.
A top priority of mine will be to reinstate adequate funding for safety net programs. Sixteen years of Republican Governorships in Massachusetts combined with Republican control of the federal government has weakened programs designed to help people in great need. We need to increase funding for adult basic education, programs that serve homeless individuals and families, the Emergency Aid to Elders, Disabled and Children (EAEDC) program, the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP), and Residential Assistance for Families in Transition Program (RAFT).
