Environment

Jeff has been endorsed by the Mass League of Environmental Voters!

"I am delighted to have received the endorsement of the
Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters. In the absence of
federal leadership, state governments have a very important role to
play on climate change issues.  I also look forward to working hard on
local environmental issues, especially flooding issues," said Thielman.

Perhaps the single greatest challenge that we face as a state and a nation is the global climate crisis. Locally, I’ve worked with friends and neighbors to rehabilitate Spy Pond Park and protect the shoreline from eroding, and I worked with students at our high school to educate people in our community about ways to keep the pond clean.

As a member of the legislature, I want to do more to protect our natural resources and to ensure that we live leave a healthy environment for our children. Here are some of my priorities if I’m elected to the Legislature:

  • I will support efforts to expand public transportation which will help reduce vehicle emissions.
  • Appropriate funding of the state’s Department of Environmental Protection will be a priority for me. The department needs funding in order to enforce existing laws. While working on the Spy Pond Committee of the Vision 2020 Task Force, I saw first hand how a lack of funding delayed state action on many issues critical to improving the quality of the pond.
  • As a legislator, I will work to increase protection of watershed lands with revenue from the Energy and Environment bond bill.
  • I favor legislation that promotes more fuel efficient vehicles and mandates better emission controls. We need to be sure the MBTA all state agencies are operating vehicles that do not emit toxic exhausts.
  • I will support the development of non-pollutant new technologies such as Cape Wind. It is important that the state set an example by making its building green and energy efficient.
  • It is critical that the Legislature provide funding and policy direction so that the state works with communities to plan for future water use, provide funding for infrastructure upgrades, and collect data that informs decision making on permit renewals and other water needs.
  • I support the new bottle bill as a way to reduce pollution and promote recycling.
