Casino Gambling

I am opposed to allowing casino gambling in our state and to permitting slot machines at race tracks. To create jobs and revenue, our Commonwealth needs sustainable economic development. While gambling is certainly part of American culture, many studies show that people with the fewest resources end up spending the most at casinos.

Projected revenue from casinos is dubious because their creation will likely result in a reduction of revenue from the state lottery, which is a source of income for cities and towns as well as many state programs. Casinos also are likely to lead to increased gambling addiction, more spousal abuse, and other social problems.

The state should put its resources into retraining our workforce, improving our K-16 education system, and containing health care costs. Such investments will make Massachusetts a more attractive place for businesses, which generate high paying jobs for well-trained and well-educated workers.
