Affordable Housing

The housing market in Massachusetts is among the highest in the nation, and according to MassInc., nearly 200,000 have left the state in the past seven years because they can no longer afford to live here. There are many families across our state and in our community that are one paycheck away from losing their homes.

In the years ahead, the Legislature and the Governor will grapple with the complexities of the housing crisis. Our first goal must be to i ncrease our production of affordable housing. Raising the bond cap as was just done by the Governor is a good start. Second, we must increase funding for the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program so that low-income individuals and families can access market-rate housing. Third, we must ensure that housing units that are currently affordable remain so. Many units that were subsidized 20 and 30 years ago will be allowed to return to market rate. The state has thousands of units that are currently affordable; should these units return to market rates, many low-income citizens would face the possibility of being homeless.

Finally, the Commonwealth must continue to improve its pre-K through 16 (college) education system so that all citizens have the skills and education they need to succeed in the 21 st century. The more training and retraining we provide to people, the higher their income and the more able they are to afford decent housing.
